Crochet Bethlehem Windows Afghan

Materials
1 skein Purl Essence Rainbow Classic (white, 11 ounce, 615 yards).
2 skeins Purl Essence Rainbow Classic (black, 11 ounce, 615 yards)...need approximately 900 yards
3 skeins Lion Brand Heartland (redwood, 5 ounce, 251 yards).
Boye Crochet hook J/10.
This pattern was designed by myself on Christmas Day 2014. It is a 4-pointed star, hence I decided to call it Bethlehem Windows.sl st: Slip stitch.
sc: single crochet
hdc: half double crochet
dc: double crochet
trc: triple crochet
qdc: quadruple crochet
Note: After making 1 square to see the pattern, I find it easier to crochet all the white sections first, then the black, then the redwood. Makes it easier to recall the pattern.

With white:
Ch 5, join with sl st to 1st chain. Ch 4.
Row 1: *2 dc in center of chain loop, ch 2,* repeat from * x2, 1 dc in center, join to 2nd chain of beginning ch 4.
Row 2: Sl st into ch 2 space. Ch 4, 2 dc in same space, *1 dc in next 2 stitches, 2 dc ch2 2 dc in next ch2 space*, repeat from * to * x2, 1 dc in next 2 stitches, 1 dc in ch 2 space, join with a sl st to 2nd chain of beginning ch 4.
Row 3: Sl st into ch 2 space. Ch 2, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 trc, ch 1, 2 dc in ch 2 space, *1 hdc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 4 stitches, 1 hdc in next stitch. 2 dc, ch1, 1 trc, ch 1, 2 dc in ch 2 space*. Repeat from * to * x2. 1 hdc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 4 stitches, 1 hdc in next stitch, join to top of ch 2.
Row 4: Ch 2, 1 dc in next stitch, *2 trc in ch 1 space, ch 1, 3 qdc in trc, ch 1, 2 trc in ch 1 space, 1 dc in next 2 stitches, 1 hdc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 4 stitches, 1 hdc in next stitch, 1 dc in next 2 stitches*, repeat from * to * x3 omitting the last 2 dc on the 4th side. Join with sl st to ch 2. Cut yarn.

With black:
Row 5: Attach black yarn to beginning of any 4 sc side stitches. Ch 2, 1 dc in next 3 stitches, *1 hdc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 2 stitches, 1 sl st in top of next stitch (should be a trc). Insert hook into space between the 2 trc, Sl st, continue to sl st around posts of 3 qdc and next trc, sl st into top of last trc. (8 st st in all), sc in next 2 stitches, 1 hdc in next stitch~, 1 dc in next 4 stitches*. Repeat from * to * x3, ending at ~. Join with a sl st to ch 2.
Row 6: Ch 2, 1 dc in next 3 stitches, * 1 hdc in next stitch~, 1 sc in next 2 stitches, 1 sl st in next sl st, 1 sl st between posts of previous row in front of next 6 sl stitches, 1 sl st in end sl st, 1 sc in next 2 stitches, * Repeat from * to * ending at ~. Join with a sl st to ch 2. Cut yarn.

With redwood:
Row 7: Attach redwood yarn to side at first of 4 dc (next to hdc). Ch 2, dc in next stitch, ch 2, *dc in next 2 stitches, hdc in next 4 stitches, sl st up the side of the red point for 3 stitches, ch 2, skip point of star, sl st down side of red point for 3 stitches, hdc in next 4 stitches~, dc in next 2 stitches, ch 2*. Repeat from * to * around ending at ~. Join to top of ch 2. Sl stitch over to ch 2 space (between the dc stitches). Ch 2.
Row 8: Dc in ch2 space, ch2, *2 dc in ch2 space, dc in next 2 stitches, hdc in next 4 stitches, skip next (slip) stitch, sl st in next 2 sl stitches, sl st in top of star point, sl st in next 2 sl stitches, skip next slip stitch, hdc in next 4 stitches, dc in next 2 stitches, 2 dc in ch 2 space, ch 2*. Repeat from * to * around x3 ending with 1 dc in ch2 space, join to top of beginning dc. Break off.

Make 42 squares (or as many as you want). Join squares with black and sc together. For the edge, sc around with black using 2 sc ch2 2sc in the corners. One row of dc around using 2 dc ch2 2dc in corners. Another row of sc. With redwood, work a row of sc around, dc around, sc around. With black, repeat another 3 rows around in the pattern. Finish off.
